Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April in 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was an only child. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. After starting her career doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was able to perform through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was also the very first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
